  7. There are two known strains of the ANTI virus. Both strains were first
  8.  
  9. discovered in France. The ANTI A strain was discovered in February,
  10.  
  11. 1989. The ANTI B strain was discovered in September, 1990.
  12.

  15. ANTI does not infect the System file. It only infects applications and other
  16.  
  17. files which resemble applications (e.g., Finder). ANTI does not infect
  18.  
  19. document files. It is less contagious than the INIT 29 virus, but more
  20.  
  21. contagious than the Scores and nVIR viruses. It is possible for an
  22.  
  23. application to become infected even if it is never run.

  27. Due to a technical quirk, ANTI does not spread at all under System 7 or
  28.  
  29. under System 6 when MultiFinder is used. It only spreads when Finder is
  30.  
  31. used under System 6.

  35. There is an error in ANTI which causes it to slightly damage applications
  36.  
  37. in such a way that VirusScan cannot perfectly repair them. In other
  38.  
  39. words, the application as repaired by VirusScan is usually not identical to
  40.  
  41. the uninfected original application. The damage is very minor, however,
  42.  
  43. and in almost all cases it does not cause any problems. If you experience
  44.  
  45. problems with an application which was infected by ANTI and repaired by
  46.  
  47. VirusScan, we recommend that you delete the repaired copy and replace it
  48.  
  49. by an uninfected original copy. This is good advice in any case.

  53. (For the technically inclined, the error in ANTI is that it clears all the
  54.  
  55. resource attributes of the CODE 1 resource. VirusScan has no way to
  56.  
  57. know the values of the original attributes, so it leaves them cleared on
  58.  
  59. the repaired application. The only effect of this error is that the repaired
  60.  
  61. application may use memory slightly less efficiently than the original
  62.  
  63. version, especially on old Macintoshes with the 64K ROMs.)

  67. As with the other viruses, ANTI does not intentionally attempt to do any
  68.  
  69. damage other than spread itself. As with all viruses, however, it can still
  70.  
  71. cause problems.

  75. The string ‚ÄúANTI‚Äù appears within the virus, hence its name.
  76.

  79. Even though the B strain of ANTI was not discovered until about 19
  80.  
  81. months after the A strain, it appears that the B strain was actually
  82.  
  83. written before the A strain. The A strain of the virus contains special
  84.  
  85. code which neutralizes any copies of the B strain which it encounters. It is
  86.  
  87. possible for an application to be infected by both the neutralized version
  88.  
  89. of the B strain and by the A strain. VirusScan reports that such
  90.  
  91. applications are infected by both strains and repairs them properly.

  95. Other than the special code in the A strain which looks for and neutralizes
  96.  
  97. the B strain, there are only minor technical differences between the two
  98.  
  99. versions of the virus.
